Vivek Sonar, a flutist par excellence and a distinguished torchbearer of the Hindustani classical music tradition, stands as one of India’s leading flutists. Renowned for his profound mastery of Tantakari and Layakari styles, he is among the most senior disciples of the legendary flutist Padma Vibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Vivek’s multi-faceted artistry has earned him widespread acclaim from both music aficionados and critics alike, who praise his unparalleled skills in flute instrumentation. Vivek has showcased his versatility through both solo performances and Jugalbandi (duet) concerts with prominent exponents of the Santoor, Sitar, Violin, and Carnatic instrumental music. Vivek’s musical journey has taken him across the globe, performing solo and alongside the legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Born and raised in Chalisgaon, Maharashtra, Vivek Sonar was profoundly influenced by his late father, Shri Ramchandra Sonar, an esteemed vocalist of the ‘Varkari Sampradaya,’ a traditional pilgrim music community. It was in this rich musical environment that Vivek began his journey with the flute at a young age. Vivek sought the guidance of his first guru in Bansuri, Pandit Purushottam Antapurkar, where he received foundational training until 1996. Under Pandit Antapurkar’s mentorship, Vivek developed essential skills and a deep understanding of the flute. In 1997, Vivek relocated to Mumbai to further his professional training under the legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. This marked a significant turning point in his artistic development, as the maestro introduced him to deeper realms of musical exploration and expression, shaping Vivek into the accomplished flutist he is today.
